Hung Gar Kung Fu
Hung Gar (洪拳) is one of the most popular style of kung fu in Southern China. It is well known for its low wide stances and rock hard forearms. Wong Fei Hung (黄飞鸿), Lam Sai Wing (林世荣), Hung Hei Gun (洪熙官), Fong Sai Yuk (方世玉), Tit Kiu Sam, Luk Ah Choi are all legendary practitioners of Hung Gar.
Legend has it that Hung Hei Gun had fatally injured a "Qing Soldier" with a single punch somewhere in Fujian, forensics found that the Qing Soldier’s rib cage was fractured & his organs were severely damaged. |
Hung Gar is also well known in popular culture. The choreography styles of movie stars like Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen were greatly influenced by Hung Gar. This started in the 70s and 80s when the Shaw Brothers movies were very popular, featuring household icons like Gordon Liu, Fu Sheng and Chi Kuan Chun. Even Bruce Lee incorporated Hung Gar into his fight choreography and Jeet Kune Do.
There were many depictions of the origins of Hung Gar Kuen. The most popular one is the story of Jee Sim Sim See(Abbot Zhi Shan), he opened the 36th Chamber of Shaolin to train a new generation of warrior monks and unshaven disciples. Unshaven disciples were ordinary people who stayed at the temple to learn martial arts but did not take the vows of Buddhism. Hung Hei Gun was one of them. Through him, Shaolin Martial Arts spread to the rebels who were loyal to the Ming Dynasty and fought to topple the Qing Dynasty. The Shaolin kung fu Hung Hei Gun taught was then changed to "Hung Gar Kuen", to honor the Ming Dynasty as the name of the first Ming Emperor was ‘Hong Wu’.

People often see the single finger hand in Hung Gar. Originally the Shaolin Palm, it was converted to the single finger hand to symbolize the Han people's ambition to retake China's Central Plains from invading "Qing Army" with one finger. Many people also think that the wide and low stances of Hung Gar, as well as the slow looking movements, will not match up to the speed and flexibility of modern martial arts like Boxing and Muay Thai. But they do not realize that no matter how fast you move, all the motion starts from the ground which transfers energy all the way to the rest of your body. This is the complete exertion of force which is trained by developing a strong root and connection of every body part.

This boosts the general health and the vitality of the practitioner, especially with the high level skill, the Tit Sin Kuen(Iron Wire Fist). Hung Gar practitioners are also physically strong with a compact muscular build and long lasting stamina.
