What is an Ectomorph? For us bodybuilding coaches, we categorize clients according to 3 body types, which we call somatotypes. They are Ectomorphs, Mesomorphs and Endomorphs. Basically, skinny, muscular and fat, respectively. It means if each of these three people do little to moderate exercise, the ectomorph will stay skinny, the mesomorph will become a muscleman, and the endomorph will remain fat. While endomorphs can be quite strong but unable to shed the fats, the troubles of ectomorphs are equally boggling; they can't gain muscle even with 1.5x or twice the amount of workout as their peers. They also lose muscle very quickly, like how endomorphs gain fat quickly if they workout less or eat more.
This cultural burden is not new, it has been there for a century or longer. Three or four generations of believing that our race is not designed to be muscular, can have super dampening effects on our mental psyche and can even lead to us program removing athletic traits out of our genetics which some call it 'de-evolution'. There might be even more ectomorphs and endomorphs and less mesomorphs in today's Asian population than Yue Fei's time. In Eastern societies, not many women are open to weight training, many are afraid it will make them muscular and unacceptable as the supposed weaker sex. So we can see that the cultural atmosphere is very different in Asia compared to other continents. People who tend to draw their energy from the influence of their peers will be badly affected. Best to count on your own determination here.
I have observed that Westerner ectomorphs are indeed stronger and tougher than Chinese ectomorphs, which is really honest bad news! I have a lot of trouble getting my thin Chinese students and clients to develop explosive power to jump high and to be flexible enough to kick high, but my thin Westerner students get it much faster, or they already had it in them. I don't want to sound racist or what but the difference is very obvious. However I feel that thin Chinese people will be able to build muscle and strength IF they take an approach that is more suitable for them.
What is your time frame to transform yourself until you are no longer ectomorph? Give yourself two years, three years to be sure. Forget about 30 day challenge or 100 day challenge, you need to be more patient than your Westerner counterparts and your mesomorph counterparts. Use your ethnical strengths. Chinese people are known for being hardworking and able to take hardship, from the days of the paddi fields. Before I begin, let me analyze your situation compared to other somatotypes.
Strength: Can Easily Have Six Pack Abs. Bodyweight exercises are very easy. Don't need to worry about eating refined carbs like Endomorphs and most Mesomorphs.
Disadvantages: Easily injured. Lack of strength, especially in upper body for Asians.
I will now start with my strategy for helping you become truly big and strong. It is applicable for both Asians and non-Asians, who have problem with packing on muscle. Along the way I will explain why my approach can help you deal with the usual obstacles ectomorphs face, and very possibly make them a thing of the past. I assume many of you will have read articles from fitness gurus, so I am here to evaluate their approach. Some are helpful, some are not. Some are not useful for Asian bodies......................
