In my opinion, Wonder Woman is better than Batman and Superman. We have grown sick and tired after half a century of watching white men exchange punches in a slugfest while grunting and flexing their muscles. Wonder Woman and the amazons fight with agility and warrior techniques, aggressively. Yes, aggression is what you hardly see good guys in Tai Chi robe doing. They are always passive while spinning or flipping around to avoid the direct force of the aggressive bad guy. Fighting is not like that, being passive and submissive does not work. They need to show that Chinese heroes are also capable of fighting aggressively, with firm determination to defeat the villains.
The plot of the movie is very unique, it takes place in World War One, we hardly see that part of history in movies nowadays. The days when planes were made of canvas wrapped around a frame and the first tanks were being used. That's the thing in Western movies and video games that the Chinese media industry lacks, the ability to reimagine history. The ability to imagine a whole new science fiction world, one that is also filled with ancient mythology. I find the island that Diana was raised on is very beautiful, it has mediterranean gardens and castle walls built on cliffs and cascading waterfalls. The digitally generated background and the costumes were very neat.
The action is not as exaggerating as Superman as Wonder Woman actually runs to every enemy to punch or kick them. Maybe men are stereotyped with upper body strength while women are seen to incorporate weapons and kicks into the fight to make up for the lack of it. Instead of flying into the sky or flashing around like Superman, Wonder Woman jumps great distances. While we've seen enough of cheat code Superman, we feel that Wonder Woman deserve sequels. With the same actress, she's done a great job. You need an optimistic face for this role.
This movie questions gender stereotyping by showing conservative London in the World War One era. Women were not allowed in government and corporate meetings. They were not allowed to speak among a group of men in general. Basically the only men they talk to will be their fathers, their bosses, their husbands and their sons. They were made to wear tight and heavy dresses that restricts movement. They were not allowed to do many jobs dominated by a male workforce, such as soldiering. That phrase, 'armchair generals hiding on their couches while their soldiers risked their lives for them', really struck me as genius.
I hope that seeing women in action will encourage our ladies to become more active in exercising. This life power is priceless and fabulous compared to skin deep cosmetic products. The amazons in the movie were highly trained athletes, displaying great physical form and movement. I feel exercise is many times more effective than make up and skincare or haircare products. Beauty is energy emanating from the dan tian to the skin, inside out.
Unlike the 80s and 90s, today Western movies no longer lag behind in terms of quality of action and choreography. Hollywood actors are known for their intensive training phase that transforms their bodies. This athleticism is hardly found in modern Chinese film productions. Since the standard setting movie 300 Spartans, the Chinese equivalent is long overdue (Saving General Yang was nowhere as convincing). With China's economic rise, people are intensively comparing the standards of China media productions with the benchmark of American movies.
I've mentioned previously that female actors in Chinese films have too little explosive power and core stability to look convincing in fight scenes. Even if you argue that orientals are more subtle by using technique over physique, I hardly see new faces with 'real Kung Fu' like Donnie Yen. Six pack abs, prominent trapezius and muscular arms are a bonus for a movie fighter, but the fighter can only be complete with true athletic ability.
It shouldn't be too hard for the movie directors and producers to find good martial arts experts to teach their cast real Kung Fu with real horse stance and real smooth yet firm and tight bridge hands. It's not hard to find personal trainers who can whip their sedentary Chinese actors into fighting shape. Actors are paid to do their job and they better make their bodies look convincing like they are worth their million dollar paychecks.
