Are Female REALLY Weaker Than Male?? Who Is Faster & Stronger?
Some people think that girls are faster than guys. Okay, let’s not look at it from a martial arts perspective, but from a sports science perspective. We all know that Force = Mass X Acceleration (F=MA). In order to move mass at higher velocities, there has to be greater acceleration. Acceleration in the human body comes from muscular contractions; therefore the person with more explosive muscular power to propel his body will be able to move faster. This is what we know as the Power over Weight ratio.
Males typically have more skeletal muscle mass than females. Androgens promote the enlargement of skeletal muscle cells and probably act in a coordinated manner to function by acting on several cell types in skeletal muscle tissue. One type of cell that conveys hormone signals to generating muscle is the myoblast. Higher androgen levels lead to increased expression of androgen receptor. Fusion of myoblasts generates myotubes, in a process that is linked to androgen receptor levels. Thus males are generally able to generate more acceleration than females.
These other differences are also visible in the average man and women:
- Males have greater mass of thigh muscles in front of the thigh as compared to behind in females.
- Males have heavier skull and bone structure.
- Males have larger hands and feet.
- Females have higher body-fat percentage than males.
- Females have a lower waist to hip ratio compared to males.
- Females have more subcutaneous fat & fat deposits mainly around the buttocks, thighs and hips
The differences in muscle mass and structure results in a higher power-to-weight ratio in males. Let’s compare a man and woman who are both 25 years old and 60 kilograms, the man will surely be able to move faster by having more acceleration as well as the skeletal structure to support the motion. Without proper core strength conditioning, girls will find it hard to handle stress placed by psychometric muscle action or anaerobic activity. So scientifically, girls do not move faster than guys. So for girls who actually believe these people saying that you can be faster than guys, you are going to be in for a very painful surprise! It is a very misleading misconception.
Then why do people say that girls move faster than guys? It may be due to the fact that guys seldom hang out with girls of the same weight. Their female friends are much smaller and lighter than them. It’s also very likely that a 70kg woman will look bigger than a 70kg man as the man has higher body density.
A lighter person will have less mass to move, therefore there is lesser stress placed on the person, allowing sustained fast movements. Can heavy people move fast? Yes they can, but it will place more stress on them and wear them out easily. That is why marathon runners are hardly over 70 kilograms. We can see in K-1, UFC and all kinds of combat sport fights, that the smaller fighters move quickly and tirelessly. If we observe carefully, the heavyweight fighters could also reach the same velocity if they have the same Power to Weight ratio, but it tires them out more so they hardly burst out in that speed. This is why the smaller girls may appear to move faster than the heavier guys in a martial arts class, it’s easier for them.
Does that mean that with lesser speed and power girls are really in a Disadvantage in combat? Not Entirely True, the structure of girls and the distribution of tendons and ligaments allow them to be naturally more flexible and smooth in their movements, hence girls move in a different pattern from guys when doing the same technique. Mentally girls are less aggressive than guys, therefore with proper psychological training girls can be more cool headed fighters than guys. Girls also have the innate ability to multitask, opening up many options like feinting, better sensitivity and reaction in some cases. These traits actually allow girls to learn and improve faster than guys!
